You love your new puppy—you pamper him a lot, and you always make sure he’s out of harm’s way. But what if your adorable pup is obsessed with chewing every single object at home? You come home and find out that your expensive couch had been scratched and your newly bought sneakers had been ruptured into pieces by your puppy. You surely won’t love it.
But fortunately, you can do some steps to keep your puppy from chewing on your precious things. It’s easier to train a puppy to the proper chewing behavior than an adult dog because you have more time for puppy training.
It’s natural for bored puppies, or even adult dogs, to chew on every thing that they encounter. Chewing is their way to release their unused energy. Expect that your puppy will always behave that way.
Rather than yelling at your dog or punishing him (which will only make both of you miserable), give him durable plastic toys to chew on. And if your puppy tries to chew something he shouldn’t chew, get his attention with a loud sound and motion him to chew on his toy.
You can try walking your puppy or help him do some exercises so that he can release his stored up energy. Aside from training it to stop chewing, walking your puppy builds a strong bond between you and your little canine friend.
Crate training helps a lot in keeping your puppy from chewing. It involves putting your puppy with his favorite chewing toys inside a crate. This kind of puppy training will give your dog boundaries while you’re away from home. It will make him enjoy his toys and eventually stop his obsession with chewing inappropriate things. Use the crate until your pet learns what he can and can’t chew on.
A normal dog behavior, chewing is a puppy’s way to explore his environment and release his energy and boredom. You need to help your puppy to stop chewing while it’s early so that you won’t have bigger problems later on.
